Ongoing research with West Virginia University’s clinical and translational science program aims to find better treatments for multiple myeloma, a rare but deadly form of blood cancer.
Multiple myeloma develops in bone marrow, the spongy tissue found in the center of most bones, where red blood cells are produced. The disease itself is characterized by abnormalities in plasma cells, — a type of white blood cell, causing it to multiply out of control, increasing from about 1 percent of cells in the bone marrow to the majority of bone marrow cells.
