Geisinger Health System to Acquire Medical College

SCRANTON, Pa. —Geisinger Health System has announced plans to acquire a Scranton-based medical college.
The acquisition of The Commonwealth Medical College and formation of a new Geisinger Commonwealth College of Medicine will be pending regulatory approval from local and state officials as well as accrediting agencies.

The medical college welcomed its first students in 2009 and currently has 480 students enrolled. Officials said it offers a community-based model of medical education at four regional campuses.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reports that an accrediting agency put the medical college on probation in 2011 as it struggled to prove it could maintain financial stability.

Officials had explored the idea of affiliating with the University of Scranton, but talks fell apart in spring 2012. A few months later, the accreditation agency lifted the probation.
