PITTSBURGH —The University of Pittsburgh is set to lead a nationwide effort to improve treatment of trauma injuries that will be funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the university’s Schools of the Health Sciences will lead the $90 million effort under a defense contract.
The first step will be an $11 million effort to develop a national network of trauma centers called Linking Investigations in Trauma and Emergency Services network, or the LITES Network.
The data gathered will focus on improving trauma care for veterans but eventually be expanded for civilian applications. Once that happens, information on trauma cases nationwide will be collected and, eventually, tested and compared to determine what treatment approaches work best in trauma cases.
