Western University president Alan Shepard has taken a temporary leave from his position after experiencing an “unexpected cardiac issue,” he said in a New Year’s Eve email to students and staff.
The condition will require “immediate attention and a leave of absence,” he said.
Shepard, 57, will be replaced for at least 30 days by interim provost and vice-president (academic) Sarah Prichard, whom he calls a “steady and strategic leader.
