Healthy Black Kids Die More Often After Surgery Than White Kids, Study Finds

(CNN) — Within 30 days from theirsurgeries, Black children had a greater risk of suffering complications and death than white children and were nearly 3.5 times more likely to die within that time period, according to new research published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

It’s well known that Black people have higher rates of poor outcomes after surgery than their white counterparts. The prevailing cause of such disparity may be that, before surgery, Black adults have higher rates of chronic diseases — in addition to other potential factors such as implicit bias and structural racism.
